All Things Symbian & ‘Then Some More’

Right from the first day when I started TheSymbianBlog, our tagline has been ‘All things Symbian and then some more!’ and today more than ever it is seems most appropriate. Back when I started this blog, Symbian was the only mobile OS that I was truly interested in, however things are changing and I find myself attracted to the likes of Android and virtually smitten by what little I have seen of Maemo 5.

It is in this light that I find myself wondering whether or not taking about things such …

If you have been following TheSymbianBlog for a long time you will recall that we brought you a preview of Nokia’s soft launch of the Indian variant of the Music Store a while ago. Today, Nokia has officially launched it.

It seems that for now you will not be able to buy tracks or albums but only use the store with a pin that will be provided via vouchers in all XpressMusic handsets and select Nseries devices and Eseries devices  such as N97,  N86 , E71, E63 amongst others. Three new …

Nokia today unveiled the ‘Booklet 3G’ a ‘mini-laptop’ that packs a 10.1″ HD ready glass screen, an A-GPS, and a claimed 12 hours of battery life in a 2cm thick chassis that is made of a single piece of machined aluminum.

The 1.2 kilogram netbook (yes, despite Nokia trying to avoid the term, that is what it is) also includes 3G/HSDPA and WiFi connectivity, an HDMI port for HD video out and will most likely run Windows 7 (from the images available).

New Nokia N97 Firmware v12.0.024 Now Available

In what should come as great news to N97 owners, Nokia has started rolling out the v12 firmware. The update is currently not available over the air, but if you fire up the Nokia Software Updater, you should see it.

The update is also visible via the ‘SW Update’ application on the device, but currently it directs you to use the PC to update.  There is not much information given about the firmware apart from ‘Improves phone’s performance and brings you the latest features’.
The N97 features user data preservation, so you can update without …

The Samsung Omnia HD Comes To India With A 1GHZ Processor

In a brief but surprising development, Samsung today officialy launched the Omnia HD in India. That is not what was surprising, the interesting thing was the the Omnia HD will hit India with a 1 GHZ processor rather than the 600MHZ ARM Cortex A8 that it is available with abroad.
Another interesting things is the name. When it was first announced, Samsung called it the Omnia HD, later on they decided it was better off with i8910 but on the Samsung India website, there is no mention of the i8910 bit. …

Eight Killer Themes For The Nokia N97

Its been a while since I have highlighted a few themes here on The Symbian Blog, so I decided it was time to make some amends and here are eight killer themes for your Nokia N97, they should work on other S60 5th Edition devices as well.

As always, my focus has been on finding quality themes that you will not grow out of quickly. I’ve also tried to maintain a nice mix of dark and light themes.

Leaked Images Of Nokia’s New Internet Tablet

I’ve just hit upon a few images of what might be Nokia’s upcoming Internet Tablet, the N900 perhaps. It has also been dubbed the ‘Rover’ and yesterday we saw a tablet like device go through FCC and today we have these images, courtesy of Mark Guim on Twitter.

The design is similar to what we have seen on recent Nseries devices and it packs a SIM card slot. The device is supposed to run Maemo 5 and may very well be Nokia’s first non Symbian smartphone (although it will be called …

How To Add Super Cool Transitions To The N97

The Symbian UI is generally criticised for not having enough eye candy and even if you turn on the theme effects on the N97, it doesn’t do much. However, for those of you who are fans of slick transitions, I have some good news.

You can now add super cool theme effects onto your N97 easily and in under 5 minutes (that’s how long it took me) by following the simple tutorial below and without a computer. But first have a look at this YouTube video I’ve put together demonstrating some of these transition effects.
