Until yesterday I had not tried the N900’s TV out functionality for myself, all I had seen were a few videos floating around on the internet. But after yesterday, the N900 has even more of my respect.
A friend had come over for the night and I wanted to show him pictures from my recent Finland/Stockholm/Estonia trip. So I hooked up the N900 to my TV (32″ 1080p) and was pleasantly surprised with the ease, speed and quality with which it was handling the images and then video. After we were done, instead of hooking my laptop with the TV to watch a bit of Star Trek, I decided to let the N900 take up this task as well and it marveled at the job.
To push the N900 event further, I minimized the video, opened up Youtube and started streaming a video, the N900 was still keeping up. Pretty happy with how the N900 was doing, I then opened a couple of web pages, Twitter and Facebook (desktop version). Still no issues.
I then switched to YouTube which had been working in the background. Next I went back to the Star Trek video, it took the N900 a couple of seconds, but the video was again playing from where I had left it, there was a small stutter for another two seconds and then all was back to normal as if the N900 was just playing this video and nothing else.
I know of no other mobile device that can multitask so well, switch between YouTube and the Video Player as if they were plain text webpages and still keep going. During all this the usual N900 desktop widgets including weather, facebook, slideshow, media player, SMS etc we all active. Have a look for yourself:
(The N900 task manager)
(The N900 desktop is fairly clear on the TV as well)
(Websites are very readable)
(Some websites such as Maemo.org fit completely into the N900’s screen, so no sideways scrolling is needed)
(This YouTube video is playing while another on device video is paused and minimised in the background)
(The YouTube window is live in the task manager and on the top right you can see the Star Trek video minimised)
(I was specially impressed by the video output of the N900)
(Chess on the big screen)
(PDF’s work very well)
The N900 is the true multitasKING!
