With the N900, one of the things that I have missed is using the dual LED as a flashlight in the dark and as a source of illumination while recording video. Fortunately, a simple app called ‘Flashlight’ can change all that. Once installed, it adds a toggle switch to the N900’s status bar which you can tap to enable or disable the flashlight.
The Flashlight switch will only show if the camera cover has been slid open. To use it in the video mode, start the flashlight and start video capture, the LED’s will automatically get disabled. Now hit the toggle switch to enable the light again.
Flashlight is available from the extras-devel repository which means it is in the development stage right now and is not recommended for normal consumers, but if you are up for beta-testing it, follow these directions to enable extras-devel if you already haven’t.
installed, restarted, still no flashlight. anyone else?
Yes, even i could not see any flashlight on the status bar.
ok..i tried restarting but i restarted with the shutter open and this time it worked..try that
just open the shutter and it will be enabled in the status bar.
worked fine, until I updated it today 🙁 Now it only flashes.
though might had been low battery, works now when cable connected
how do you install this?
Simply use the extras-devel repository in your application manager to install this app. It will be listed there.
Make sure you have extras-devel enabled – http://maemocentral.com/2009/12/29/how-to-enable-extras-extras-testing-extras-devel-repositories-on-the-n900-with-one-click/
this app only works until you restart – after that, it disappears

toggle switches are very handy specially if your project requires momentary on switch.,
