Rant: Why Did Nokia Take Away The Clear Device Mode On The N900?

One of the things that I fear is that very soon I will reach a stage where I will need to hard-reset the N900, for me this is because despite the warnings I like to look at applications in the extras-testing and devel repositories. Sooner or later I will end up installing a rogue application that will hamper N900 performance and a desire to start from a clean slate will be born.
Now had this been a Symbian device, it would have been a simple matter of hitting *#7370# and I …

Demo Of Qt From ‘The Way We Live Next 3.0′ Event

Nokia has just released Qt 4.6, the first release of Qt to natively support both Symbian and Maemo. Why Qt is important is because it enables the creation of applications which can run on both platforms yet be born from a single code base. In other words, the developer can make an application once and then supply it both for Symbian and Maemo devices.
This is the tool Nokia is looking at to harmonise software development across its different platforms. Qt also supports Windows 7, Apple Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) …

A Symbian Phone That Splits Into Two – Packs A 12MP Camera & Comes With An Optical Projector

Fujitsu has created a Symbian smartphone (Fujitsu F-04B) that has a detachable QWERTY keyboard, touchscreen, a 12Mp camera and an optional camera module that can be snapped on if required. For days when you would like a slim device, you can use the phone independent of the keyboard navigating with the touch interface.

NTT DOCOMO, the leading mobile operator in Japan, recently announced its line up of 19 new handsets, and the F-04B is one of the 9 based on Symbian. The device will be available in March-April next year, but …

The N900 Disassembled On Video

A few days ago we brought you the N900 service manual that showed you how to disassemble the N900. But if pictures weren’t enough, the guys at TehkSeven.net have gone ahead and disassembled their N900 on video. The video makes for a very interesting yet scary watch, specially if you treat your latest gadget like a baby.

They were able to reassemble their N900 into a working condition but lost one screw in the process. As always, these things are best seen and forgotten, never to be attempted yourself!

noBounds! & N900: Full HD Video Out Via WiFi Could Become A Reality

Over an hear ago I had written about the noBounds! project (run by people from the Nokia Research Center in Germany) that aimed to provide a low-power solution for mobile users to extend Smartphone and Internet Tablet screens and project them to higher resolution external displays such as high definition TV’s, projectors and near-to-eye displays (NED).

The aim of the project was to let those devices output video at Full HD (1920×1080p) – 30 FPS over USB or WiFi.

So starting today you can expect a whole lot of coverage from the event, and to kick things off here is a video showing what it feels to be inside Nokia House. In addition to trying to show the areas …

How To Create A Physical Task Manager Button For The N900

Since the N900 has no physical button to call up the task manager, you need to exit the full screen mode of an application in order to tap the top left corner of the screen and bring it up. This is a bit of an annoyance, although you can bring it up with the Ctrl + Backspace shortcut incase you are browsing with the keyboard slidout.

But you will have to agree it would be far more convenient if we could simply press a physical button to bring it up. Heikki …
