Music Stopper Brings A Sleep Mode To Your Symbian Device – Free From The Ovi Store

A sleep mode is what has been missing from the Symbian feature set for quite some while, or from the feature set of a number of operating systems actually. We’ve had a old Python app, but nothing like ‘MusicStopper’ that works out of the box and is a free install from the Ovi Store.
In addition to stopping the Music Player and Radio after the pre-defined period (1-60 minutes) the application can also quit other applications that you may have running.

Navigating the app is simple, all you do is slide …

Nokia Ovi Suite 3.0 Beta Now Out, Mac Support As Mythical As Ever

Via the Beta Labs, Nokia has just rolled out a brand new beta of the Ovi Suite with a brand new home view which concentrates on improving the general quality of the suite with special regard to stability, sync and the maps loading experience. Another major focus has been better integration of the Ovi Music and eliminating the need of needing the Ovi Player for music management and downloads.

Additionally the installation and first time use wizards have been optimized to reduce steps needed to start to use Nokia Ovi Suite.

Review: Travelling With The Nokia N8

Almost whole of last week I was in Dublin for the first ever MeeGo Conference (more on the conference later) and had with me the N8 as my primary device. I was also carrying the Samsung Galaxy S as a side phone. While back home, the way I use both devices is that my main SIM remains in the N8, while a 3G SIM is placed in the Galaxy S for data purposes only.
All through the flight I was debating where to put the local SIM I bought in Dublin …

MeeGo Conference, Dublin: In Pictures

Today is the ‘unconference’ day of the first ever ‘MeeGo Conference’ and thus much more relaxed. The last two days have had the Aviva Stadium abuzz with packed sessions, lots of energy and a ton of chatter about the future of MeeGo. Add to that that every attendee of the MeeGo Conference is being given away a MeeGo touting Lenovo IdeaPad and you can image what the atmosphere is like.
But instead of trying to convey what is going on in words, here are tons of pictures from day 1, 2 …

MeeGo Gets A Second Conference: May 23-25 In San Francisco

At the MeeGo Conference in Dublin the second annual MeeGo Conference was just announced. Going forward, we will be seeing two conferences every year with the 2011 edition coming May 23 – 25 in San Francisco. MeeGo has two major releases every year and from now on  we will have a conference after each release.

By that time we should have also seen Nokia’s first MeeGo device and a great place to measure developer interest in the new platform. Around the same time, May 30 – June 1 2011, the world …

Swype Officially Comes To The N8

The first Symbian^3 version of Swype hit the Ovi Store with support for the Nokia C7 a while back, but a similar version with support for the N8 has only hit the store today. Previously if you wanted to get Swype on your N8, you had to go about it in a roundabout manner, however now you can simply search for it and install.

If you already have the C7 version installed, I’d suggest uninstalling that and downloading the N8 version afresh. The file is a 3.3 MB download, but curiously …

Review: Grid Touch Lets You Bid Adieu To Symbian’s UI Woes

I haven’t been this excited about an application in ages. Grid Touch by OffScreen, a company that has had over 25 million downloads from the Ovi Store. What does it do you ask? It very elegantly eliminates the need to ever go into the default menu again and replaces it with a very modern swipe based access that it an absolute joy to use.

Grid Touch lets you find, organise and launch all your apps with a very pleasing and fast UI. All your apps are organised on a grid …

Stephen Elop Will Be Keynoting At MWC 2011

In a move which may mark Nokia’s return to the Mobile World Congress, Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop is all set to keynote at the conference on Wednesday Feb. 16, 2011 in a talk titled ‘Connecting the Dots – A 360° View on Consumer Electronics‘. What is interesting to note is that he will also be joined by Ryuji Yamada, President & CEO, NTT DOCOMO, Paul Jacobs, Chairman & CEO, Qualcomm and Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO of Research In Motion.

This means that you shouldn’t expect no new device or policy announcements at …

Instant Search Comes To Symbian With Tap2It

Google’s rolled out instant search on Android and the iPhone, and if you you own a Symbian^3 device and have been wondering what the experience is like, give Tap2It a spin. The app is a free download from the Ovi Store and uses the Google platform APIs to search across websites, images, local content and youtube videos instantly.

While we wait for an official Symbian portrait QWERTY, the developers of Tap2It have included a portrait QWERTY of their own and it works well considering you only need to input a …
