Late last night the Socially team released a major update for the Symbian version of the social networking app that features a ‘completely new and rewritten engine to deliver faster performance’. We have covered Socially before, showing you how it could be used to sync your friends’ Facebook profile pictures and birthdays to your phonebook.

I have installed the new Socially 3.0 beta on my N8 and there is a marked improvement in scrolling and general performance. Additionally the team also lists the following changes:

  • removing the many UE quirks that have been confusing and frustrating our users
  • building optimized user experience separately for v3 and v5 handsets
  • improved Social Notifications – 5mins refresh & customization by social network

Since this is a beta, Foursquare and LinkedIn are not active in this release and the ability to pull birthdays from Facebook is also amiss. A stable version of the 3.0 release is expected in the next 7-10 days and the Socially team is looking for your feedback to help shape the new version.
