New Browser, Ovi Maps & Emoticons Coming To Older Symbian Devices

Here’s some terrific news for those of you using older Symbian S60 v3.2 or v5 devices like the E72, N97 Mini, X6, C6 etc, Nokia is working on bringing a bunch of updates to the older family of Symbian devices. First is Nokia Browser 7.3, the same version that’s coming with Symbian Anna, next is an update to Ovi Maps, and finally there is emoticon support for text messages and MMS, all very welcome improvements.

Another good things is that unlike those of you Symbian^3 owners waiting for Symbian Anna, the updates for the older devices won’t make you wait too much. The Nokia C6-00 and Nokia 5230 get updates starting today, while the others will follow in the next few weeks. Here’s a complete list of devices getting the updates:

Symbian 3.2

  • Nokia E72
  • Nokia E52
  • Nokia E5
  • Nokia C5-00
  • Nokia 6700 slide

Symbian 5.0

  • Nokia C6-00
  • Nokia C5-03
  • Nokia 5230
  • Nokia 5235
  • Nokia 5250
  • Nokia X6
  • Nokia N97 mini
  • Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
  • Nokia 5530 XpressMusic

As you can see Nokia has tried to cover all the popular models, you’ll find that the original N97 is missing, but hey, they’re probably trying very hard to forget it even exists. The Ovi Maps update will be different for S60 v3.2 and S60 v5, “Ovi Maps 3 SR4 will feature on Symbian 3.2 devices, bringing indoor positioning through WiFi, as well as travel and recommendation services such as those through Lonely Planet. For users of Symbian 5.0 devices, you’ll get Ovi Maps 3 SR6, adding public transport lines and check-in services to social networking sites”.

The news of this updates comes at a time when no one was really expecting Nokia to support these older devices, some of which are over two years old. Great work Nokia.

  1. I did the update today. I was hoping for a noticeable improvement in the performance but it isn’t. The web browser from Anna feels way better, almost as good as Opera. Gotta love the emoticons embedded into the text messaging. There’s plenty to comment, but I’m still dissapointed in the lack of apparent ”fluid” motion.

  2. i did the update as well and i did notice some speed improvement unlike BDS but other than that i havent been able to notice any other significant change but there is good support.
