<p><img class="alignright" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Facebook-S-Facebook-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S-01.png" alt="Samsung Releases Facebook S! Facebook For Android Alternative For The Galaxy S" />The Samsung App Store on the Galaxy S line of Android devices packs less than 10 applications and is usually not the place where you would go for all the cool Android apps. Although it does have Asphalt 5, Vlingo and a free fun utility apps like road SMS, but that&#8217;s about the extent of it.</p>
<p>Today I was surprised to find a pretty cool addition to the store in the form of Facebook For Samsung or Facebook S! Apparently Samsung&#8217;s isn&#8217;t too happy with the current iteration of &#8216;Facebook for Android&#8217; and decided to offer something better for its users. I found the app on the Galaxy S and am not sure if Samsung&#8217;s other Android devices have also been blessed with this update.</p>
<p>I already have Facebook for Android installed and did not have to sign into the Facebook S! app after I downloaded and installed it. The major draw of the application is Samsung&#8217;s location integration which lets you tag your status with your location either using GPS or by picking a location on a map.</p>
<p><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Facebook-S-Facebook-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S-07.png" alt="Samsung Releases Facebook S! Facebook For Android Alternative For The Galaxy S" width="270" height="451" /> <img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Facebook-S-Facebook-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S-10.png" alt="Samsung Releases Facebook S! Facebook For Android Alternative For The Galaxy S" width="270" height="450" /></p>
<ul>
<li>The application is a light download, under 1.5 MB in size.</li>
</ul>
<p><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Facebook-S-Facebook-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S-08.png" alt="Samsung Releases Facebook S! Facebook For Android Alternative For The Galaxy S" width="270" height="451" /> <img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Facebook-S-Facebook-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S-09.png" alt="Samsung Releases Facebook S! Facebook For Android Alternative For The Galaxy S" width="270" height="450" /></p>
<ul>
<li>You can click on a geo-tagged status to see it on a map.</li>
</ul>
<p><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Facebook-S-Facebook-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S-11.png" alt="Samsung Releases Facebook S! Facebook For Android Alternative For The Galaxy S" width="270" height="450" /> <img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Facebook-S-Facebook-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S-12.png" alt="Samsung Releases Facebook S! Facebook For Android Alternative For The Galaxy S" width="270" height="451" /></p>
<ul>
<li>Tap the &#8216;add location&#8217; button to pick a spot on the map or use the phone&#8217;s GPS. I was unable to use the GPS mode indoors, its almost as if the phone gives up too soon. May be an update will improve this feature. On the computer, the link to your location opens up in Google Maps.</li>
</ul>
<p><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Facebook-S-Facebook-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S-13.png" alt="Samsung Releases Facebook S! Facebook For Android Alternative For The Galaxy S" width="270" height="450" /> <img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Facebook-S-Facebook-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S-05.png" alt="Samsung Releases Facebook S! Facebook For Android Alternative For The Galaxy S" width="270" height="450" /></p>
<ul>
<li>There are also options to upload pictures and videos directly from the camera or the gallery.</li>
</ul>
<p><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Facebook-S-Facebook-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S-03.png" alt="Samsung Releases Facebook S! Facebook For Android Alternative For The Galaxy S" width="270" height="451" /> <img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Facebook-S-Facebook-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S-04.png" alt="Samsung Releases Facebook S! Facebook For Android Alternative For The Galaxy S" width="270" height="451" /></p>
<ul>
<li>The photo viewing mode is not too great as you cannot swipe across images and will have to use the back key to move to a new photo. A double tap will zoom the image and turning the phone will make the app switch to landscape.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Facebook-S-Facebook-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S-02.png" alt="Samsung Releases Facebook S! Facebook For Android Alternative For The Galaxy S" width="357" height="596" /></p>
<ul>
<li>One thing I liked was the ability to sort your Facebook news feed by the category you want, really helps cut the clutter out.</li>
</ul>
<p>There is no widget, but the application does have a nice and simple UI, and a few features that seem to work better than the stock Facebook application for Android. Give it a go and let us know what you think.<br />

Swype is an alternate text entry system that makes makes entering words on a touch based device ridiculously easy. You no longer need to be accurate when you hit the screen and all you do is &#8216;swype&#8217; across the on-screen keyboard with one continuous finger or stylus motion and the software accurately guesses the word you were wanting to enter. <p>Swype is an alternate text entry system that makes makes entering words on a touch based device ridiculously easy. You no longer need to be accurate when you hit the screen and all you do is &#8216;swype&#8217; across the on-screen keyboard with one continuous finger or stylus motion and the software accurately guesses the word you were wanting to enter. I have been using Swype on the Galaxy S, for over a month now and I am incredibly <a href="http://betalabs.nokia.com/blog/2010/09/01/swype---text-input-for-screens" target="_blank">glad to see this application come to Symbian</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Swype.jpg" alt="Swype For Symbian" width="365" height="204" /></p>
<p>The best part about Swype is that it learns new words very easily, automatically picks up names from your phonebook and also remembers the words that you have typed manually so that you can just Swype them next time. For times when you do not want to Sywpe, you can use the very same keyboard as a regular QWERTY keyboard. The following video from the Nokia Beta labs team should help explain Swype even more.</p>
<p><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="560" height="340" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vZOvlMyAMGQ?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="340" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vZOvlMyAMGQ?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p>Swype is currently available on the Nokia N97, N97mini, X6, 5800, and 5230 with support for more devices expected soon. Do keep in mind that there is a very brief learning curve when you first start Swyping, so persist before you give up. <a href="http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/swype-for-symbian/more_info" target="_blank">This bunch of support videos</a> should also help you get started.</p>
<h3>Key features</h3>
<ul>
<li>Standard QWERTY keyboard layout makes Swype easy to learn</li>
<li>Use a stylus or finger – Swype’s amazing input path analyzer allows you to go fast and sloppy. Just make a reasonable effort to trace through the word and Swype will do the rest</li>
<li>Double Tap Editing – Make a mistake? Double tap on a word to bring up a list of other possible matches.</li>
<li>Auto-Spacing</li>
<li>Auto-Capitalization</li>
<li>Auto Spelling Correction</li>
<li>Automatic Help – Swype detects when you may be having trouble or might benefit from a particular feature and prompts you with helpful tips and instructions</li>
<li>Instant access to Symbols, Numbers and Editing functions</li>
<li>65,000-word Learning Dictionary – Chances are the word you are typing is already in the Swype dictionary. If it isn’t, just tap it out once followed by a space and Swype will remember it for future use.</li>
</ul>
<p>Download <a href="http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/swype-for-symbian/more_info" target="_blank">Swype for Symbian</a> from Nokia&#8217;s Beta Labs.</p>
<p>In <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2010/08/20/initial-impressions-of-the-nokia-n8-raw-potential/" target="_blank">my N8 preview</a>, I said &#8216;At the current stage I will have to give the N8 a 8/10 but if the browser gets updated and we get Swype for text entry, that score will easily rise to 9.5/10 for me&#8217;.</p>
<p>I assume Swype for N8 will be out when it ships and all indications do point to a new browser as well. Needless to say, the N8 just became even better in my eyes.<br />

<p>Nokia is really working on making the whole N8 experience amazing and I will be happy to wait for a perfect device than see a rushed firmware. Multitouch on the keyboard next?<br />

The FM transmitter on the Nokia N900 is one of my favourite features. The N900 was not the first Nokia to have it but the first to actually have a usable one. This was because you could boost the FM transmitter output and thus get clear sound even in slightly congested airwaves.

<p>The FM transmitter on the <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/tag/nokia-n900" target="_blank">Nokia N900</a> is one of my favourite features. The N900 was not the first Nokia to have it but the first to actually have a usable one. This was because you could <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2010/01/07/how-to-boost-the-performance-of-the-fm-transmitter-on-your-n900/" target="_blank">boost the FM transmitter output</a> and thus get clear sound even in slightly congested airwaves.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/N900-FM-Transmitter-Hack.jpg" alt="How To Make Your N900's FM Transmitter Work In The 76.0Mhz - 107.9Mhz Range" width="580" height="348" /></p>
<p>But in a city like Dubai or LA, its virtually impossible to get a station where there is no interference from other air waves and this makes the FM transmitter much less useful. But as with most of the N900&#8242;s other features, there&#8217;s a mod to make it even better and a simple hack can make the N900&#8242;s FM transmitter broadcast at anything between the 76.0Mhz &#8211; 107.9Mhz range. This means that you can go below the N900&#8242;s default 88 Mhz and easily find a clear station as there are no FM stations broadcasting at under 88 Mhz due to government regulations and other reasons. All you need is a FM tuner that supports these frequencies.</p>
<p>Here is how to perform the mod:</p>
<ul>
<li>The first thing you need to do is uninstall the FM Boost and FM Transmitter Widget if you have them installed. Also install any other app/widget that interacts with the FM transmitter. The reason I recommend doing it is because from what I have read, some users have had problems. For the majority it shouldn&#8217;t matter.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Next, <a href="http://maemo.jacekowski.org/binary/fmtxd" target="_blank">download this file</a>, unzip it and transfer it to the N900. Make sure you keep in on the N900&#8242;s internal storage and not inside any folder.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Open the Terminal and enter &#8216;<em>sudo gainroot</em>&#8216; without the quotes. If you do not have &#8216;rootsh&#8217; installed, install it from the <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2009/12/29/how-to-enable-extras-extras-testing-extras-devel-repositories-on-the-n900-with-one-click/" target="_blank">Application Manager</a> before you enter this command.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Next enter &#8216;<em>cd /home/user/MyDocs/</em>&#8216;.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Now enter &#8216;<em>mv fmtxd /usr/sbin/</em>&#8216;. If you want to backup your default files first, use &#8216;<em>mv /usr/sbin/fmtxd /usr/sbin/fmtxd_old</em>&#8216;.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Followed by &#8216;<em>cd /usr/sbin/</em>&#8216;.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Then &#8216;<em>chmod +x fmtxd</em>&#8216;.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Finally &#8216;<em>fmtxd -d</em>&#8216;.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Now close the terminal.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Now open the Application Manger and install an app called &#8216;FMTX Faker&#8217;.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>You will find it in the &#8216;Settings&#8217; menu. Open it and confirm.</li>
</ul>
<p>That&#8217;s it, the FM transmitter on your N900 can now broadcast at anything between 76.0Mhz &#8211; 107.9Mhz and the power is also boosted to 120 so you will not need the FM Boost application anymore. The N900 just became more awesome. Follow this <a href="http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=60567" target="_blank">TMO thread for more</a>. Original hack by <a href="http://jacekowski.org/Maemo/FMTXD" target="_blank">Jacek Milewicz</a>.</p>
<p><strong>PS</strong>: Please undertake the above at your own risk. It may also be illegal to use the above frequencies in your country. You have been warned.<br />

That&#8217;s not all, the Android version has been built from the ground up and represents the future of TweetDeck&#8217;s future iPhone and iPad applications.</p>
<p>The focus with this upcoming release is on showing you all your friends&#8217; cross-service activity in one app. &#8216;Multi-column is still the order of the day but now columns are blended based on the type of activity rather than the service. And all this whilst retaining the most powerful functionality from each included service&#8217;.</p>
<p><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="560" height="340" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2N2CWrr4sMM&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1?rel=0&amp;hd=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="340" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2N2CWrr4sMM&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1?rel=0&amp;hd=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p>We also have this <a href="http://phandroid.com/2010/08/11/tweetdeck-teases-us-with-20-seconds-of-android-app-action/" target="_blank">short video demo</a>, that&#8217;s more of a tease than an actual look into the application. <p>In a seriously awesome piece of technological prowess, the N900 can make the call you were thing about without you have to touch a thing. Manipulating the N900 from the mind has been made possible by a Qt based application called <a href="https://projects.forum.nokia.com/ThinkContacts" target="_blank">ThinkContacts</a>, paired with the <a href="http://www.neurosky.com/mindset/mindset.html" target="_blank">NeuroSky MindSet. </a></p>

<p>The interaction between the user and software is done via brainwaves and for this to happen the user needs the NeuroSky Mindset<a href="http://www.neurosky.com%29/"></a> which reads the user’s brainwaves, uses an analog-to-digital converter and sends the digitalized information via Bluetooth to the phone. The byte sequence, called packet, sent by the headset is then translated into the user’s level of meditation and attention by using an algorithm provided by the headset’s company. Once all of this is done, the signal is passed on to the ThinkContacts app via bluetooth and it places the call.</p>
<p>To get an idea of how it works, I recommend that you check out the following video.</p>

The ability to overclock the N900 has existed for a long time now and we have covered it before. But overclocking the N900 has never been so easy, two simple installs from the Application Manager and a short command via the terminal is all it takes. <p>The ability to overclock the N900 has existed for a long time now and <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2010/04/04/how-to-overclock-the-nokia-n900/" target="_blank">we have covered it before</a>. But overclocking the N900 has never been so easy, two simple installs from the Application Manager and a short command via the terminal is all it takes. If you have been wanting to try it out but were holding out because it seemed too complicated, this guide is for you.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Overclock-N900.jpg" alt="How To Easily Overclock Your N900 In Under Two Minutes" /></p>
<p>However, please note that overclocking the N900 will void your warranty, although it is possible to the flash to the stock kernel/state if you no longer want to overclock your device. Apart from that you also risk damaging your device and losing data. Please continue at your own peril.</p>
<p>That said, lets get started.</p>
<ul>
<li>The first thing you need to do is install &#8216;rootsh&#8217; from the Application Manager, make sure you have the relevant repositories enabled.</li>
<li>Next install the <em>&#8216;Enhanced linux kernel for power users</em>&#8216; from the &#8216;System&#8217; section in the Application Manager. It supports overclocking upto 1.15 Ghz.</li>
<li>Restart the device.</li>
<li>Now install &#8216;<em>Enhanced kernel for power users (settings)</em>&#8216;.</li>
<li>Open the X-Terminal and enter the following command.</li>
</ul>
<blockquote>
<pre dir="ltr">sudo gainroot
kernel-config load ideal
</pre>
</blockquote>
<p>This will load the ideal profile which overclocks your phone to 850 MHz. At this point if you experience reboots or the phone seems to act funny, try using the &#8216;lv&#8217; settings that uses slightly higher voltages than the &#8216;ideal&#8217; profile. If it is still unstable try &#8216;ulv&#8217;. The various presets are &#8216;default&#8217; &#8211; &#8216;lv&#8217; &#8211; &#8216;ulv&#8217; &#8211; &#8216;xlv&#8217; &#8211; &#8216;ideal&#8217; &#8211; &#8216;starving&#8217;.</p>
<blockquote>
<pre dir="ltr">sudo gainroot
kernel-config load lv
kernel-config limits 250 850
</pre>
</blockquote>
<p>If the N900 seems stable, you can have these settings as a preset of your own.</p>
<blockquote>
<pre dir="ltr">sudo gainroot
kernel-config load lv
kernel-config limits 250 850
kernel-config save myideal
</pre>
</blockquote>
<p>With the current configuration, the N900 will resort to the default 600 MHz state everytime it is rebooted. This is done to avoid letting the N900 get caught in a reboot loop. If you are happy with the N900&#8242;s performance and stability, you can then also set the N900 to overclock by default on startup. Use the following command:</p>
<blockquote>
<pre dir="ltr">sudo gainroot
kernel-config default ideal (whichever preset you want to set as default e.g. myideal)
kernel-config show (this will show you your current settings)
</pre>
</blockquote>
<p>If you want to revert to the original settings, <a href="http://wiki.maemo.org/Kernel_Power#Deinstallation" target="_blank">here is the procedure to follow</a>. Jakiman over at talk.maemo.org has a very comprehensive guide as well, if you are looking for more information <a href="http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=595582&amp;postcount=774" target="_blank">I suggest you give it a read</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/QCPUFREq.jpg" alt="Overclock N900 With QCPUFreq" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">One last thing, if you want to configure the N900&#8242;s overclocking setting with a visual UI and not the terminal, install QCPUFreq from the Application Manager. Then once you have installed the packages mentioned above all you will need to do is move the slider to overclock to the desired level. My suggestion is don&#8217;t go past the 850 MHz mark.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Before you do this, please keep in mind one thing &#8216;because it can be doesn&#8217;t mean, you have to do it!&#8217;</p>

But if you have a N900, you no longer need to worry about that because <a href="http://talk.maemo.org/member.php?u=35934">benlau</a> has published a brilliant app called <a href="http://maemo.org/packages/view/frontview900/" target="_blank">Front View</a> (FrontView900) that makes this process fun.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/frontview-screenshot2.jpg" alt="Front View Turns The N900 Into A Very Good Document Scanner" /></p>
<p>You can take the image anyway you want without having to align the document and the app will automatically detect which part of the image is the document and discard the rest of the image. Plus, it will also let you crop and rotate the shot you&#8217;ve just taken so that you have the perfect scan.</p>
<p>Not only that, it can detect multiple documents within one image and you can even manually select the part of the image you want. <a href="http://talk.maemo.org/member.php?u=35934">benlau</a> has also put together a video showing off this really impressive application.</p>
<p><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="578" height="456" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nfbiEaCBcUQ&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1?rel=0&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="578" height="456" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nfbiEaCBcUQ&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1?rel=0&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p>The application is currently in <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2009/12/29/how-to-enable-extras-extras-testing-extras-devel-repositories-on-the-n900-with-one-click/" target="_blank">extras-testing</a>, but at the rate it is going, it should soon be making it to Maemo Extras, I just <a href="http://maemo.org/packages/package_instance/view/fremantle_extras-testing_non-free_armel/frontview900/0.1-1/?net_nemein_favourites_execute=fav&amp;net_nemein_favourites_execute_for=9f507f328b1011df88d417ea48455ac95ac9&amp;net_nemein_favourites_url=/json/fav/org_maemo_packages_package_instance/9f507f328b1011df88d417ea48455ac95ac9/" target="_blank">voted for it</a> myself.</p>
<p>Hat tip to @<a href="http://twitter.com/alextootchie" target="_blank">alextootchie</a> for the find.<br />

Marco Barisione&#8217;s just released an app called &#8216;Ringtoned&#8217; for the N900 that brings the ability to set custom ringtones for each contact in the N900&#8242;s phonebook. The best part about this app is that it integrates well with the N900 as there&#8217;s no standalone setup, you can asign a default ringtone from the Profiles menu as usual and for custom ringtones, just go to the Contacts application, select the contact and press the new &#8216;Set custom ringtone&#8217; button in the menu.

<ul>
<li>The UI to set a ringtone is just like the one under Settings&gt;Profile. When you are finished, press done and you are all setup.</li>
</ul>
<p>The app is available from the <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2009/12/29/how-to-enable-extras-extras-testing-extras-devel-repositories-on-the-n900-with-one-click/" target="_blank">Extras-Devel repository</a>, or you can also download it from Marco&#8217;s <a href="http://people.collabora.co.uk/~bari/maemo/per-contact-ringtones.install" target="_blank">personal repository here</a>. Since this is the first release there might be bugs and if here is heavy load on the system, the ringtone might start after a slight delay. Future versions of this application should have the ability to set a custom ringtone for anonymous phone calls and for calls from an unknown number as well.</p>
<p>The inability to set custom ringtones for individual contacts has been something a lot of people have missed on the N900, but once again through <a href="http://blog.barisione.org/2010-07/custom-ringtones-for-your-contacts/" target="_blank">Marco Barisione</a>&#8216;s fine work, the community has come through.<br />

<p>If you tried using the <a href="http://store.ovi.com" target="_blank">Ovi Store</a> today, you would have noticed that it was down for some scheduled maintenance. Its back up now and with that come some under the hood improvements,  a new Ovi Store client v1.07(12) and a couple of visible differences. The Ovi Store client is still based on WRT and very similar to what you have been using thus far.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Ovi-Store-Update-1.jpg" alt="Ovi Store Gets An Update - So Does The Client" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The first change that you will notice is the &#8216;Load more items..&#8217; dialog once you reach the end of a page, this gets rid of the page by page display of apps and is helpful if you quickly want to go back to an app that you may have overlooked. Next is the fact that search is now much better, it probably searches the entitle and description instead of just the start of the app&#8217;s name, as was the case earlier.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Ovi-Store-Update-2.jpg" alt="Ovi Store Gets An Update - So Does The Client" /></p>
<ul>
<li>Its a smallish download and a install that takes about a minute.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Ovi-Store-Update-3.jpg" alt="Ovi Store Gets An Update - So Does The Client" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Ovi-Store-Update-4.jpg" alt="Ovi Store Gets An Update - So Does The Client" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Ovi-Store-Update-5.jpg" alt="Ovi Store Gets An Update - So Does The Client" /></p>
<ul>
<li>The look and feel is similar to what we are used to, so if you were hoping for a Qt based client you will have to wait some more.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Ovi-Store-Update-6.jpg" alt="Ovi Store Gets An Update - So Does The Client" /></p>
<ul>
<li>Notice that none of the apps start with the word &#8216;Symbian&#8217;. This improved search should help in discovering more apps.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Ovi-Store-Update-7.jpg" alt="Ovi Store Gets An Update - So Does The Client" /></p>
<ul>
<li>While on the subject on the Ovi Store, you can also download our very own &#8216;The Symbian Blog&#8217; app for free from the Ovi Store. For <a href="http://store.ovi.com/content/34308" target="_blank">non touch devices</a> and this is the <a href="http://store.ovi.com/content/34338" target="_blank">link for touch devices</a>.</li>
</ul>
<p>There is better use of channels and labeling to help discover more content, and the <a href="http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/11708_Ovi_Store_gets_a_refresh_and_n.php" target="_blank">team at AAS</a> thinks that the client seems faster as well. Notice any other improvements? Let us know in the comments section below.<br />

<p>It is a &#8216;digital darkroom&#8217; for the N900 that can perform:</p>
<ul>
<li>Filtered-Black-&amp;-White-Conversion</li>
<li>RGB-Color-Correction</li>
<li>Brightness, Saturation, Contrast and Sharpening</li>
<li>Pixel-level-Cropping (Portrait is still a little fishy)</li>
<li>Tonal Shadows/Highlights</li>
<li>Kinetic Photo Browser</li>
<li>360-Degree-Precision-Rotation</li>
<li>EXIF-Browser-with-maps</li>
<li>Unlimited-Visual-Undo</li>
<li>Is Multi-Platform (Qt4.6, PyQt)</li>
</ul>
<p>By looking at the above list if you are not quite sure as to what the software does, the following video should help.</p>
<p><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="360" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qpjq1n_VLfA&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b&amp;border=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qpjq1n_VLfA&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b&amp;border=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>

<p>Ansel-A is available for installation from <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2009/12/29/how-to-enable-extras-extras-testing-extras-devel-repositories-on-the-n900-with-one-click/" target="_blank">extras-testing</a> and is virtually a must have if you consider yourself a photographer of any kind. The best part is that the developer is taking feedback, bugs and feature requests, so if you like the app get involved at this <a href="http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=55861" target="_blank">TMO thread</a> or leave a <a href="http://ansel-a.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">comment on his blog</a>.<br />

The N8 keeps on pulling off awesome stuff that I have wanted for ages, but Nokia seems intent on not showing the world just how cool the N8 actually is! Case in point, support for USB on the Go was a small entry on the spec sheet and now in the latest video demoing the N8, support for bluetooth hardware is mentioned but only bluetooth keyboards are shown. That is something even old devices could do.

<p>The N8 keeps on pulling off awesome stuff that <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2007/06/01/bluetooth-mouse-on-a-smartphone/" target="_blank">I have wanted for ages</a>, but Nokia seems intent on not showing the world just how cool the N8 actually is! Case in point, <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2010/04/28/the-n8-brings-usb-reading-capabilities-to-symbian-something-i-have-wanted-for-ages/" target="_blank">support for USB on the Go</a> was a small entry on the spec sheet and now in the latest video demoing the N8, support for bluetooth hardware is mentioned but only bluetooth keyboards are shown. That is something even old devices could do.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/N8-Bluetooth-Mouse.jpg" alt="The Nokia N8 Supports Bluetooth Mice - But Nokia Won't Highlight It" /></p>
<p>But just at the end you see a mouse pointer in the video and it actually works! Symbian^3 brings bluetooth mouse support and the N8 actually supports it! But instead of shouting from the rooftops they don&#8217;t even mention it aloud. Give something like this to Apple and they would make the world go crazy.</p>
<p>Anyway, <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2007/06/01/bluetooth-mouse-on-a-smartphone/" target="_blank">back in June 2007 I had asked for exactly this</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Senario</strong>: I own an N95 and a bluetooth keyboard. While going on a vacation, I just throw the Laptop’s bluetooth mouse in and leave. In my hotel room I setup my BT keyboard and the BT mouse, plug the TV out cable in leave the phone there and go sit on the couch a few meters away. Now, just image what my web browsing experience would be like! Not only web browsing, but if this could be implemented with Office Editors or even viewers, the combo would really rock! The possibilities are endless, even a few games could make do with this functionality. Playing something even as basic as Solitaire would become a breeze!</p></blockquote>
<p>Come 2010 and we have HDMI and high resolution screens. The developers can have a ball with this.</p>
<p><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="360" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/pWAUqkU45hw&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b&amp;border=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pWAUqkU45hw&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b&amp;border=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p>The other parts of the video show off the music player, coverflow and HDMI in general. The N8 is one impressive device. But I still can&#8217;t get over how they waste such game changing features. In a time when Symbian is taking a hit, its all about marketing, ask Apple.<br />

<p>I am not someone who likes changing themes often. I like themes that look elegant, polished and definitely not brash. Over the last seven or so months of owning the N900, I have tried almost every theme that is available and have come away with the following as my picks.</p>
<p>Most of these themes comes from the Maemo repositories so <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2009/12/29/how-to-enable-extras-extras-testing-extras-devel-repositories-on-the-n900-with-one-click/" target="_blank">make sure you have them enabled</a>. Then just type the name to search in the Application Manager and install. So without further adieu, here are my must have themes for the N900, in no particular order.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Black Plastic</strong> &#8211; The lists in this theme are shaded differently, nice change.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/N900-Black-Plastic-Theme.jpg" alt="Nokia N900 themes " /> <img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/N900-Black-Plastic-Theme-2.jpg" alt="Nokia N900 themes " /></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>an-DROID</strong> &#8211; One of my favorites. Love the colours on this one.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Free-Nokia-N900-Themes-03.jpg" alt="Must Have Themes For The Nokia N900" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Free-Nokia-N900-Themes-04.jpg" alt="Must Have Themes For The Nokia N900" /></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Bossa Teal </strong>- For times when you want custom icons. Seems to slow down the phone though and takes 6MB in rootfs.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Free-Nokia-N900-Themes-05.jpg" alt="Must Have Themes For The Nokia N900" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Free-Nokia-N900-Themes-06.jpg" alt="Must Have Themes For The Nokia N900" /></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Carbon</strong> &#8211; Brilliant. Dark. Polished. Makes the N900 look good.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Free-Nokia-N900-Themes-07.jpg" alt="Must Have Themes For The Nokia N900" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Free-Nokia-N900-Themes-08.jpg" alt="Must Have Themes For The Nokia N900" /></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>D-Theme Red</strong> &#8211; I like red themes. They go well with the black on the N900. This is part of the D-Theme series, check them out for different colours.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Free-Nokia-N900-Themes-09.jpg" alt="Must Have Themes For The Nokia N900" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Free-Nokia-N900-Themes-10.jpg" alt="Must Have Themes For The Nokia N900" /></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>iStyle Black</strong> &#8211; Part of the iStyle series. Best of the lot.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Free-Nokia-N900-Themes-11.jpg" alt="Must Have Themes For The Nokia N900" /></p>

<ul>
<li><strong>Matrix</strong> &#8211; Its here because it goes amazingly well with the Matrix <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2010/04/15/live-wallpapers-come-to-the-n900/" target="_blank">live wallpaper</a>. Plus I like the vibrant colours too.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Free-Nokia-N900-Themes-13.jpg" alt="Must Have Themes For The Nokia N900" /></p>

<ul>
<li><a href="http://forums.internettablettalk.com/showthread.php?p=460131" target="_blank"><strong>Red Alert</strong></a> &#8211; Another red theme, but sadly not part of  the repositories so you will have to manually download and install if  you liked it. Get the <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?tmyifmerttt" target="_blank">.deb here</a>, locate it in the file manager and tap to install.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Free-Nokia-N900-Themes-15.jpg" alt="Must Have Themes For The Nokia N900" /></p>

<ul>
<li><strong>R-Style Green</strong> &#8211; Part of the beautiful R-Style series that features similar design in new colours. Green is easily my favourite.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Free-Nokia-N900-Themes-17.jpg" alt="Must Have Themes For The Nokia N900" /></p>

<p>So there you have it, those were my picks. Think there is a theme that deserves to be in this list that I have missed out? Please let me know. What themes do you like?<br />

<p>Controlling your TV from your mobile phone has been possible for a long time now, I have personally used the Nokia 6600 for this functionality in the past. Then IR ports started to disappear from most devices and recently they have made a comeback of sorts. The N900 has one, so the obvious use is turning it into a remote.</p>
<p>You have already seen Raemote, which turns the <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2010/03/19/raemote-turns-your-n900-into-an-apple-remote/" target="_blank">N900 into an Apple remote</a>, today is the turn of  the Irreco widget. This compact widget features basic features that include volume and channel control, mute the TV and power it on or off.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src=" http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Irreco-Widget-N900-4.png" alt="Irreco Widget Lets You Control Your TV From The N900's Homescreen" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">It works independently of the Irreco app and can be downloaded from <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2009/12/29/how-to-enable-extras-extras-testing-extras-devel-repositories-on-the-n900-with-one-click/" target="_blank">extras-devel</a> in the Application Manager. The range is obviously nowhere near that of a dedicated remote, but is good enough for the odd use. After installation reboot the N900 to see the widget on the homescreen.</p>
<ul>
<li>Next, longpress the widget to enter its settings and go on to download your specific remote.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Irreco-Widget-N900-1.png" alt="Irreco Widget Lets You Control Your TV From The N900's Homescreen" /></p>
<ul>
<li>Once downloaded you should see the following. If you don&#8217;t find the specific remote you are looking for, try selecting something close to it.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Irreco-Widget-N900-2.png" alt="Irreco Widget Lets You Control Your TV From The N900's Homescreen" /><br />

<ul>
<li>Simply exit the settings and start using the widget.</li>
</ul>
<p>Lets us know your experience with it.<br />

<p>In comes Cotchin!, a web based app for Foursquare which can be used to going to <a href="http://cotchin.com/m" target="_blank">cotchin.com/m</a> from your N900. It uses the Geo-Location extension of the N900&#8242;s MicroB browser to locate nearby venues for checking-in. Even on a slowish connection, it is fast and also offers the ability to look for your friends, at your history, search, shout and of course check-in.</p>
<ul>
<li>A simple tap on the &#8216;Places&#8217; button brings the following up within seconds.</li>

<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Cotchin-N900-Foursquare-Web-App-2.jpg" alt="Cotchin! Is The Best Way To Check-In From The N900" /></p>
<ul>
<li>You can tap on a name to check-in. Also tap the Facebook and Twitter buttons depending on whether you want the notification sent to the respective service. I love this feature.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Cotchin-N900-Foursquare-Web-App-3.jpg" alt="Cotchin! Is The Best Way To Check-In From The N900" /></p>
<ul>
<li>Clicking on &#8216;Friends List&#8217; brings a list of your foursquare friends, sorted by the time of check-in. You can also use the search function here.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Cotchin-N900-Foursquare-Web-App-4.jpg" alt="Cotchin! Is The Best Way To Check-In From The N900" /></p>
<ul>
<li>The &#8216;Me&#8217; reveals your history, mayorships and badges.</li>
</ul>
<p>To use Cotchin! on your N900, you will need to install the Maemo Geolocation plugin if you already haven&#8217;t. You will find it in the Application Manager&#8217;s repositories. Alternatively, <a href="http://maemo.org/packages/view/maemo-geolocation/" target="_blank">download it from here</a> and install.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Cotchin-N900-Foursquare-Web-App-1.jpg" alt="Cotchin! Is The Best Way To Check-In From The N900" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">When you open <a href="http://cotchin.com/m" target="_blank">cotchin.com/m</a> on your N900 for the first time, you will see the above popup, select &#8216;always allow for this site&#8217;. The developers have pledged their support for the N900 and promise features like mini reviews, an enhanced history page and enhanced venue search in subsequent versions.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">In my opinion, it is currently the best way to check-in from the N900.</p>

<p>A calendar widget is a must have for the N900 and almost everyone has it on their homescreen. Unfortunately it is not customisable and a tap on it opens the day&#8217;s agenda and not the month view, something I hate. Fortunately <a href="http://talk.maemo.org/member.php?u=21992">nicolai</a> has produced a replacement for it that is based on the default N900 theme and looks just like the default, but with a few additions and the ability to customise. Get it from <a href="http://thehandheldblog.com/2010/06/06/2010/05/04/2009/12/29/how-to-enable-extras-extras-testing-extras-devel-repositories-on-the-n900-with-one-click/" target="_blank">extras-devel</a>, search for &#8216;Calendar Home Widget&#8217;.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Calendar-Widget-2.png" alt="A Replacement For The Inbuilt Calendar Widget Is Here &amp; Its Awesome" /></p>
<p>You can now set the duration for which the calendar checks, the number of rows the widget shows (2-9), the calendars it displays, and what mode it opens when tapped on. Here is what it looks like in the &#8216;Large&#8217; size, notice the default widget for comparison sake. The extreme right of the replacement widget shows whether an entry is a birthday or has an alarm set, it also shows the month on top.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter" src="http://thehandheldblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Calendar-Widget1.png" alt="A Replacement For The Inbuilt Calendar Widget Is Here &amp; Its Awesome" /></p>
<p>The only disadvantage is that it does not adapt to the current theme like the inbuilt widget. Hopefully, a future update will fix that as well. Follow this TMO <a href="http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=697345" target="_blank">thread for the latest</a>.<br />
