With the Lumia 800, Nokia and Microsoft’s synergies have finally been able to intersect after months of anticipation and the end result is nothing short of impressive. With the Nokia N9, we saw Nokia create a new class of device that was designed with the ‘eyes up’ philosophy in mind, with Windows Phone Microsoft tried to put people first, giving you the ability to quickly glance at information which is relevant to you.

We all know that the Lumia 800 is one amazingly beautiful device, but since this was going to be my first real experience with Windows Phone Mango, I was curious about what to expect. What would be the notifications like? Is the Metro UI really as good as it is made out to be? Are there any niggles which could threaten to be show stoppers? Will Nokia’s device be differentiated enough from other manufacturers like Samsung and HTC?

So in the following video I go over all of these questions and try and answer them. The video plays for just over 16 minutes, and should give you a fair idea of what to expect from the Lumia 800.

Without giving away too much, all I can say is that I was having a hard time putting the device down.

(Video available in HD)

The Lumia 800 is already on pre-order in France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and Britain and is expected to hit stores sometime mid-week in November. It is also coming to Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan before the year-end.

Based on what you have seen so far? You do want one? More Lumia 800 stories here.

I called the Nokia N9 ‘easily the best looking device on the market today‘ and that statement still stands with the Lumia 800. The capacitive buttons don’t distract one bit from the beauty of the device, and in fact I think it makes the device look better.
While Nokia’s Drive app will be exclusive to its Windows Phones, the Nokia Maps application will be available on the Windows Phone marketplace for all Windows Phone devices. The application is a little different from what you are used to on Symbian devices and follows the Metro style UI.

Another difference is you cannot pre-load maps on this application, that is restricted to Nokia Drive. So you will need an active data connection to pull the maps and other location information around you. But once your get that out of the way, the experience on the app is very good. You can pinch to zoom, have access to all sorts of guides with Lonely Planet and Michelin integration, similar to the Symbian counterpart. Another aspect that has been really improved is public transport.

In certain regions around the world, Nokia will be offering tracking of public transport accurate upto the minute. The first view lets you search for places nearby, while the second view populates the map with the top 25 restaurants, shops, vistor attractions around you to give you a better idea of how to get around a new city.

Here is a in depth look at the application. Unfortunately the video was recorded in a noisy room, but the video should still give you a fair idea of what to expect from the Windows Phone variant of Nokia Maps.

Many thanks to Dan Martins from the Nokia Maps team for the demo.

At Nokia World, Nokia introduced a brand new social location service called ‘Nokia Pulse‘ that aims at helping you answer the “where are you?”, “how do I get there?”, “where should we meet?” questions that keep popping up in real life.

(Watch in HD)

“So, how does it work exactly? Imagine, you have just arrived at the airport. What do you typically do? Call/SMS someone close, say from your family to coordinate a pickup. Several SMS/calls are exchanged before the pickup happens successfully. With Nokia Pulse, all you need to do is type “Here!”or simply check-in and an instant notification of your update is sent to everyone in your family group tagged with your current location. You receive a response, “On my way” with a location tagged that shows you exactly where you ride is on the map. In addition, Nokia Pulse allows you to discover and post nearby places with recommendations, ratings, directions and even direct access to a phone number for a quick phone call. So while you wait, you can enjoy your favorite coffee at a nearby Café and inform your ride where you are with just one tap.”

So basically everyone in your group get to know where you are so that you can coordinate meetings, pick ups etc better, your contacts can even comment on checkins. It is also much more fun, and a seamless way of doing things. The applications is in beta and is available for Symbian, Windows phone and you can even access it from any other phone by going to m.pulse.nokia.com and at pulse.nokia.com from any browser on the desktop.

One of the core differentiating features on Nokia’s Windows Phones will be the Nokia Drive app. Different from Nokia Maps, which will be available for everyone at the Windows Marketplace, Drive is Nokia’s Navigation app that lets you pre-load maps and use the phone as an offline navigation device.

The app has been created with an in car experience in mind, so the buttons are huge so that you can easily press them across the dashboard if you have the phone mounted. The interface is simple so that you take your eye off the road for the least amount of time and here is what it looks like.

You can download maps for entire countries from within the application. Also present is the ability to download navigation instructions in a bunch of different languages, all from within the phone.

PS: The video was recorded in a noisy room, so apologies for that. It should however be able to give you a fair idea of what to expect from the application.
Here on Day 2 of Nokia World, we had a fun little performance from the UK’s Got Talent group Diversity and I was able to film some of it on the Lumia 800. So if you’re wondering about what sort of video capture will Nokia’s first Windows Phone device be capable of, look no further.
Make sure you watch the video in HD.

But that’s all theory, so to see how the Lumia 800 performs in the worst conditions possible for a smartphone camera, I took an extended set of low light pictures around London. The full resolution pictures are available on Flickr as set.

So as you can see, the Lumia 800 did a fairly impressive job at keeping the noise low, colours accurate and producing a very acceptable picture overall. It might not have the N8′s prowess, but I think it would be fair to say that as far as smartphone cameras go, this is right up there with the best. The only thing that you need to be careful about is waiting for camera to finish focussing before pressing the shutter fully to take the picture, as the auto focus speed on the Lumia 800 isn’t as fast as that of the N9.

What do you think of the camera?
Nokia had promised that it would cut down on the time between the announcement and shipping, and they have delivered. I have with me the retail box of the Lumia 800, the device that will be making its way to Europe next month itself and other regins soon thereafter.

During the keynote Nokia showed a live stream of the Lumia 800 boxes actually being packed at the Nokia factories in Finland and here’s what everything inside looks like.

I have just spent some hands on time with Nokia’s first Windows Phone device, the Lumia 800 and here are my initial impressions.

The design is beautiful, its the same design as the N9, and that’s a very good thing. Most people will not experience the N9 first hand due to limited availability. The Lumia 800 will be the first such device they see, and it looks spectacular. In my N9 post I called the design the best I’ve seen to date and with the Lumia nothing’s changed.

The Lumia 800 gets a dedicated camera button and that’s always a welcome feature.

The screen size goes from 3.9″ to 3.7″ to accomodate the capacitive touch windows buttons, and that does seem like a disadvantage of using the same design. However, even otherwise the lower .2″ of the screen would always be occupied by the back buttons on the N9, so when you actually use the Lumia 800 after the N9, the screen doesn’t feel smaller. The only place you’ll probably notice is this while playing videos and looking at pictures.

The Windows Phone experience feels natural on the device, this is despite the fact that I am used to the Swipe UI on the N9.

For more watch the video below, we start off with a bit of an introduction and then cut to my thoughts on the device.

The HD version of the video is available here.

Here at Nokia World, the first Windows Phone devices from Nokia have just been made official and the first of the two is the Lumia 800. The design of the device is the same as that of the Nokia N9, with the 3.9″ display giving way to a 3.7″ variant to accomodate the touch sensitive Windows Phone buttons, and the only other difference is the addition of the camera shutter key on the side.

Internally, its a whole new ball game, because of the Windows Phone chasis requirements, the Lumia 800 runs a 1.4 Ghz Qualcomm processor, aided by hardware acceleration and a graphics processor. It however shares the camera module with the Nokia N9, an 8 megapixel shooter with a f 2.2 aperture. The screen may be slightly smaller, but it is every bit as nice as the N9′s with everything almost floating on the top.

Needless to say, the Lumia 800 runs Windows Phone Mango and will be shipping next month itself in select countries, in line with Nokia’s new policy of announcing new devices closes to launch. The Lumia 800 will come in black, pink and cyan and will retail at 420 Euros before taxes or subsidies.

Here are a few hands on pictures of the Lumia 800, stayed tuned for a ton of hands on coverage as the day progresses.

Nokia World kicks off tomorrow morning at 9 AM London time and in less than 24 hours we will know what the new face of Nokia looks like. Nokia, a company that prides itself on its ability to adapt and change right from rubber to modern telecommunications, stands at the cusp of something brand new, something that could make or break it. This Nokia World is more than just an event for announcing new hardware, for Nokia it represents the culmination of the events that started taking place post Stephen Elop’s announcement as the CEO and President of Nokia, which in turn presented themselves in the famous strategy announcement of February 12, 2011.

Tomorrow is the day Nokia stands proud, waiting to be judged on whether or not did it correctly put all its eggs in the right basket. Over the afternoon I took a walk around the venue for Nokia World and caught a sneak at the last minute preparations that are on in full swing. You can tell, everyone is excited and the energy is infectious. If I was already looking forward to Nokia World today, now I absolutely cannot wait to see what Nokia has up its sleeve.

We’ve known for a while that Nokia’s Windows Phones will ship with Mango, with a limited amount of customization. A period of eight months isn’t nearly enough to add much value to Mango and we’ll perhaps have to wait to see what Nokia’s influence on Microsoft creates. But what we can count on is that Nokia Maps will replace Bing Maps on the device, so will Nokia Music and both of these services add tremendous value to the handset. Bing Maps isn’t the best solution in the market, while Nokia Maps is right up there with the best. Nokia has music stores in a ton of major countries around the world, and having it pre-loaded on a Nokia Windows Phone device seems like a brilliant proposition.

Even on the day the partnership was announced, I was optimistic and the events unfolding in the next 8 months and the evolution of the OS has certainly made me affirm my view. Mango has been getting constant positive feedback and Google’s deal with Motorola has further backed Stephen Elop’s vision of Microsoft being a better fit for Nokia’s assets.

Whether we see three devices tomorrow or just one, tomorrow will be remembered as the day when Nokia either got back on its path of world domination 0r slipped towards the murky waters of failure. The devices we see tomorrow may not even end up on sale around the world, but they will definitely set the tone for whats to come, and it today’s world its almost as if mindshare is everything.

All signs point to a new Nokia that promises and delivers – faster, stronger and harder. Nokia, the world is watching, I cannot wait to see you deliver.

PS: On the fun side of things, the awesome foursquare powered Nokia Gift machine will be at Nokia World, so if you are here, make sure you check it out! The keynotes will be live streamed here.

“Work for the Windows phone is on track and it would be launched in the first quarter of next (calendar) year.”

The Mobile World Congress 2012 is only happening at the end of Feb. 2012 and Nokia is expected to make a splash there. It is possible that phones announced at the MWC will come to India immediately, in line with the company’s new policy of announcing devices closer to the release date. However, we also know that Nokia is planning a rapid release model for its Windows Phone devices and therefore there is room for India getting other devices that are announced before the MWC 2012.

We’ll probably know more at Nokia World, which is happening in less that two weeks from today.

Its blazing fast. You can keep swiping and the next image will keep on coming. I tried the Photos app on the N8 with over 400 images and video already inside it and it just kept throwing one photo after another with no lag whatsoever. Don’t believe me, watch this video in glorious HD.

The only nag that I could see was that the pinch to zoom was not as responsive as it is on a few other devices, you need to go a little slower and then things workout fine. May be its the way Nokia’s made it. That being said, the device I had was still not running commercial software so things might change by the time the N8 hits shelves.

Impressed? You should be!

At Nokia World, Nokia gave out 1000 N8′s to all those who attended the first developer session. The devices have the production hardware and the PR 1.0 software, however even the PR 1.0 on those was not the commercial version with which the N8′s will ship soon.

I was unlucky to miss out on the handsets, fortunately my friend Iain Wallace at Do It Different was able to get his hands on one and was kind enough to let me have a go at the N8 for the entire time I was in Edinburgh. Soon we concluded that the N8 is a little better than you expect in all departments and this came as a very pleasant surprise. The way he summed it up was ‘You get the iPhone and are immediately wowed, and with time you start to notice the shortcoming and get frustrated. On the N8 you keep liking it more, the more you use it’. I completely agree and I have to say that I liked the N8 much more on day three than I did on day one. It is definitely a device that grows on you and the sheer number of underlying improvements to Symbian^3 make for a huge jump in the overall user experience.

Anssi Vanjoki wasn’t kidding when he said that you should use the N8 before passing judgment on it. Get past the similar looking homescreen, the underlying experience will make it worth it. Without further ado, here is my first look at the Nokia N8 in glorious HD.

I personally am not too bothered about the alleged delays, Nokia is bent upon doing a good job with the first firmware and an additional one/two weeks is a small price to pay for a stable device.

What do you make of the N8?

At Nokia World last week I was able to catch up with Nokia’s camera king Damian Dinning (@PhoneDaz) for an interview. Not only was it a sheer pleasure interviewing someone so deeply involved with Nokia’s camera phones, but it was also a perfect opportunity to see what the Nokia N8 was capable of when it came to video recording.

The conditions were as bad as they get. Strong moving lights, a ton of noise and background music. So was the conversation we had audible? I’m glad to say that the N8′s dual microphones were at their best and we got some pretty nice footage. In case you were wondering, we talked about video stabilization, the new EDOF cameras on the new Symbian ^3 devices and what ‘new’ is in store for the N8.

To get an idea of what the N8 is capable of, might I suggest watching the interview in HD.

So the new EDOF camera might even pleasantly surprise the not so keen photographers after all. I saw some shots taken from a C7 and they were not bad at all, even the large 8 x10″ and bigger prints looked great. Much thanks to Iain Wallace at Do It Different for shooting the video on his N8.

The number one thing that I have wanted Nokia to do for a long time is shout about its products, tell the world how awesome they were instead of letting them speak for themselves, have powerful aggressive keynotes and take the competition head on whenever, wherever they could and this precisely why this Nokia World came as a very pleasant surprise.

Just one day before Nokia World Anssi Vanjoki quit, which was two two days after OPK had left. I imagine that does dent the morale and bring at least a little uncertainty in. So more than anything, my eyes were on they keynote’s tone and tenor instead of the device announcements because the devices will come and go, but the tone Nokia set on September 14, 2010 would define how they shape up in the next 5 years.

But the moment I walked into the Nikalas Savander and Anssi Vanjoki keynote, I could literally see the change. Nokia was talking about the competition, they virtually kick-started Nokia World with Apple’s use of the words ‘Connecting People’. Nokia never does that. Then came Anssi Vanjoki, all charged up and it was treat to see him in action. There were points made left right and center, no one was spared. Here are a few of my own tweets, I think they would capture my reaction better than what I could write now.

Scott at Apple shown off. The connecting people words played with. Sweet. #nokiaworld

We’ll not apologise for not being Apple, Samsung and so on. We are Nokia. I like the tone of this keynote. #nokiaworld

Oh yes. Nokia sells more smartphones than Apple + Android combined. #nokiaworld There in your face. ‘We shift into high gear for high end’

*No matter how you hold them* #nokiaworld

“Nokia and not #google is the leader in mapping” #nokiaworld Nokia is taking them on aggressively.

Shoutout to people who said the N8 is the same old @Symbian by looking at the homescreen. ‘You’re wong’. #nokiaworld

An aggressive Anssi on stage. @nokia ‘s tone is like it has never been before. #nokiaworld

So there you go, Apple, Samsung, Google all talked about. There were even phrases like ‘One more thing’ used. ‘You want numbers, here are a few numbers’ was said before the smartphone number were discussed. Here are another couple of things that I missed during the keynote.

‘Cooperation with Microsoft will be even easier and better now’. Anssi Vanjoki while talking about more enterprise features that will come to the Nokia E7.

He also mentioned avoiding ‘Speeding tickets’ while talking about Ovi Maps. If you don’t get the context, here’s some.

At his last Nokia World, Anssi Vanjoki went out all guns blazing. He will be missed. But that’s not the only pleasant surprise. On September 15, the second day of Nokia World, HTC decided to hold its own event in London and they were sending buses to Nokia World to collect people. I am not kidding. What would the old Nokia have done? Just sit there and let it pass. But oh no, things are changing and they did something I least expected. They made survival kits and handed them everyone who was headed to the HTC event from Nokia World. What did it have? See for yourself.

An HTC sandwich. I thought it was brilliant. There was tongue in cheek humour, and loads on fun. Sadly, some sections of the media, (specially the ones headed there themselves!) didn’t see the joke in it and started branding Nokia’s move as one in bad taste. Bad taste? Your competition virtually hijacks your annual event and you cannot even joke about it? Nokia suddenly looked like the ‘bully and not the ‘victim’. But if were in Nokia’s shoes, I’d still be happy. Bullys’ get things done, victims remain just that, victims.

Nokia is coming back in a big way. Brace for impact.

PS: If you are wondering, why the red balloon reference? Nokia also sent some teenagers with red Ovi Maps balloons to the venue for HTC’s venue! The cherry on the cake?

Swype is something that I have really been looking forward to and with all the new Symbian ^3 devices packing a capacitive display, the Swype and thus the whole text input experience should be pretty nice. Swype isn’t available for Symbian ^3 as a beta yet, but fortunately at Nokia World I was able to find a Nokia C7 running Swype.

In even more good news, the keyboard of the new C7 also features correction and in itself offers a pretty compelling experience.

More on the C7 later.

I have just got back from day one of Nokia World and clearly the star of the show was the Nokia E7, a device that Nokia believes is the ultimate ‘business’ smartphone. It has a great keyboard which has a zero learning curve, the keys are nicely spaced out, the sides offer a good grip and you can fire away almost immediately you pick up the device.

There are also the usual Symbian ^3 goodies like USB on-the-go, support for bluetooth mice and keyboard. There is also HDMI, 720P HD video capture and a gorgeous 4″ display that packs Nokia’s new CBD technology. ‘CBD’ stands for ‘Clear Black Display’ and Nokia could have easily thought of a more fancy name, but that’s not who they are. The display theoretically works well in sunlight and I can tell you for a fact that the colours pop out much better, the blacks look great and the 4″ display on the E7 looks pretty amazing. Its just let down by the 640 x 460 resolution.

With that in mind, here is a five minute hands on demo of the E7 that I shot literally minutes ago.

What do you think of the E7?
