Nokia Belle (Symbian Belle if you will) devices have been available for some time, but its finally time for the likes of the N8 and E7 to get a taste of Belle goodness in the form of the v111.030 firmware. The update completely revamps the old Symbian UI in favour of multiple homescreens, widgets and a pull down notification bar ala Android and recently iOS.

It also features a ton of other improvements, not the least of which is the web browser. So not only will your experience feel smoother, the update will also rid you of the pesky ‘memory full’ errors. Needless to say this is a highly recommended update. However, because the sheer amount of changes, there will be no over-the-air availability and you will have to find a Windows machine running the latest Nokia Suite to carryout the update.

Despite Nokia Suite’s ability to restore your data automatically, it is prudent to manually back up as well. As always, the update is being rolled out in phases, country by country and product code by product code. Fortunately, Nokia has a nice map up which lists exactly which countries and product codes are seeing the update, an excellent tool.

The update is available in India, most parts of Asia, Europe and even the United States. More on All About Symbian.

If you couldn’t wait for the official Belle update and are running the ‘leaked’ versions, My Nokia Blog reports that should be able to update via the Nokia Suite as well.

Nokia 3D World Gaze is a pretty cool app built with the premise that the Earth is a giant sphere and we are always on top of it. What follows is that far-away continents and cities are in reality somewhere below you and not linear, like we usually think of them.

So how it works is that you simply point your phone in a direction and it lets you see through the surface (and insides) of the planet all the way to the other side. You can use it to explore your immediate surroundings or fly to any part of the world. In addition to geographical features such as continents in their real physical locations, Nokia 3D World Gaze allows you to see geotagged media, day and night regions, current location of the Sun, and other content from locations around the world.

So while looking at an area of the world, you can tap the pictures button to see pictures from that region or the latest news. The N9 version even features Wikitravel searches based on city name. Have a look at the demo to see how it actually works.

The application has just become available for the Nokia N9 on Nokia’s Beta Labs and has been available for Symbian devices for a sort while now. Try it here.
A brand new foursquare client based in Qt has just gone live on the Nokia Store and I highly recommend you download it. Its a major improvement over the existing client, complete with photo uploads, notifications, comments, listing venues on maps and so on. It looks great and feels fast.

Search for ‘foursquare’ on the Nokia Store and you should see the client, its still called ‘Foursquare for Symbian’. It might not be as smooth in its operation as 4squick is, but its free.

Nokia has just started rolling out an update to the Symbian Anna release on the Nokia N8 (and quite possibly other Symbian Anna devices like the C7, E7 as well) in the form of the v25.007 firmware update.
The update is tiny, weighing in at a little less that 1 MB over the air, so don’t expect any drastic changes. The N8 and other Symbian Anna devices support user data preservation, so your data should be safe post the update as well. Look for the update on the E7, C7, C6-01 and the X7 soon.

The update could very well also serve to prep the phone for the Symbian Belle update, we’ll know soon. If you don’t see the update, its possible that it isn’t available for your product code yet.

Over the last two days Nokia invited a host of people to experience their new NFC and Symbian Belle devices in a wonderfully relaxed setting that is Goa. The two day event was all about Nokia’s push towards NFC and its attempt to recapture the hearts of Nokia loyalists who have been swayed by Android and other platforms. A major player in Nokia’s arsenal is the new Symbian Belle experience that revamps the ‘old’ Symbian UI, and replaces it with something fresh, smooth and fast.

All three Symbian Belle devices, the 701, 700 and the 600 are powered by 1 Ghz processors and this results in an infinitely smoother experience compared to even the devices that run Symbian Anna. Additionally, each has its unique selling point – the 701 has the brightest screen, the 700 is the slimmest and the 600 can play FM radio without headphones having to act as antennas and its also the loudest. The one common element between all of them is NFC.

NFC – Or ‘Just Tap’ As Nokia Calls It

Explaining NFC to an average person on the street is a humungous task and Nokia seems to be playing it smart here. Instead of shouting NFC NFC NFC, they will focus on a catch phrase called ‘Just Tap’ which will be at the helm of all NFC branding. The end user doesn’t need to know that NFC is the handshake and how bluetooth then takes over to handle the actual transfer of data, the message he gets is that if you tap two Nokia phones against each other, the picture is automatically sent across, no turning on bluetooth nothing. All of this is handled by the phone on its own and to make sure that NFC doesn’t drain all the power in the background, it automatically shuts off if the screen is locked or if the save battery mode is activated. Additionally, the phones also come with a NFC toggle widget that you can place anywhere on your home screen.

With the first generation of NFC devices, Nokia not focusing on the mobile wallet aspect at all. They probably recognize that the infrastructure is not in place yet, and are therefore looking at showing the users other use cases for NFC. Pairing their bluetooth accessories, using NFC tags as links to app, for mobile vouchers and so on.

To educate the consumers, Nokia will also be putting an NFC tag in all retail boxes of the new Belle devices. The tag will take users to the Nokia app store and help them find even more apps. There is also talk of getting up NFC tags in the thousands on Nokia Priority Stores in India, so that users can just walk in, tap their phones and get unto speed on the latest app, music and other information that is being pushed.

We’ve heard of Angry Birds Magic before, its the same Angry Birds, but with a twist. To unlock new levels you need to tap your phone against an NFC enabled devices, tag etc. This game will also be preloaded on all these new devices. With time we’ll see more and more similar games which would let users initiate multiplayer sessions using NFC, and generally take the NFC experience to a level the consumer would look at as almost magical.

Nokia seems to be an the forefront of this movement and with their vision of taking NFC to price points their competitors aren’t hitting, they are in the running to build a potential lead.

I personally can’t wait for the day when I can walk into my coffee shop, tap my phone and walk out with my favorite cup of coffee without even having to order, with an app taking care of my preferences, and not just payments. The use cases for NFC are huge, soon your phone would act as the key to your car, your house and even your hotel room.

Which aspect of NFC are you most looking forward to?
There is no special build for Symbian Belle yet, but I’m glad to inform you that the Symbian Anna version seems to work just fine on my N8 running Belle. Infact, the screenshot on the side was taken on that same device.

The Swype 2.0 update brings:

Portrait and split-screen support for devices with Symbian Anna

Cutting-edge predictive tap auto-correction engine

30 downloadable language dictionaries

Many incremental UX changes based on Nokia and Android Beta Labs feedback

Hundreds of bug fixes.

You can head over to this page and download it for yourself, if you have Swype from the Ovi Store installed, its best to uninstall that version before updating to the beta.

Get Swyping!

PS: With Nokia being a shareholder in Swype, I hope they are working on a Windows phone version as well.

In Hong Kong today, Nokia has just announced three brand new devices called the Nokia 600, Nokia 700 and Nokia 701. These new smartphones will run Symbian Belle out of the box and start shipping within the present quarter, which translates to about 35 days from today. The Symbian Belle OS will also be be available for existing Symbian^3 devices that were only recently upgraded to Symbian Anna.

(image via AAS)

All the devices announced today come with NFC, a pentaband radio, WIFi, HSUPA 3G speeds and Gorilla glass protected screens. While all the three devices have been positioned as mass market options with aggressive pricing, each device boats a unique characteristic to it.

Built for those who like to enjoy music on the go, the Nokia 600 is the loudest smartphone with the loud speaker inside it rated at 106 phon. It also packs an FM transmitter and an internal antenna so that you do not need to plug in the headphone to listen to FM radio. Specifications wise, it runs on an ARM 11 1 Ghz processor, comes with a 640 x 360 pixel 3.2-inch nHD capacitive touch screen and measures 111 x 53 x 13mm while weighing in at 100g.

It comes with 2GB of mass memory, a microSD card slot and packs a 5MP EDoF camera capable of shooting video at 720p. The Nokia 600 will be available for in EUR 180 ($260) before taxes or subsidies in Black, White, Lime and Pink. More on Nokia Conversations.

For the size conscious, the Nokia 700 boasts of being the most compact smartphone in the market today with dimensions of 110 x 50.7 x 9.7mm and a weight of just 96g. Like the Nokia 600, the 700 also packs a 3.2″ capacitive display and a 5 megapixel full focus shooter that is capable of recording video in 720p HD.

The 700 also gets the honour of being Nokia’s greenest phone till date. It will be coming in cool grey, silver/white, coral red, peacock blue and purple varieties and will retail at EUR 270 ($390) before taxes or subsidies. More at Nokia Conversations.

Completing the trio is the Nokia C7 based, 701 that features the brightest screen in the world on any smartphone. While the design of the Nokia 701 may be similar, it improves on the C7 by adding a 3.5-inch IPS LCD display with ClearBlack technology, a 1 Ghz processor alongside a brand new graphics co-processor with a faster clock and four times the graphics memory of previous Symbian smartphones. The 701 measures 11 x 56.8 x 117.3mm and weighs in at 131g.

The camera remains unchanged from the C7, a 8-megapixel full focus camera with a dual-LED flash on the back that can shoot video at 720p. The 701 comes with 8GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot of an additional 32 GB of space. The Nokia 701 will be available in steel dark, silver light, amethyst violet, and white variations at an unsubsidized price of Euro 290 ($420) without taxes. More at Nokia Conversations.

The big story here is the introduction of the all new Symbian Belle OS that overhauls the Symbian UI with the homescreens, status bar, dialogs and menus all getting a fresh modern look. A complaint that a lot of people had with Symbian was its aging UI and with the Belle update, that has changed. With Qt applications coming thick and fast, the trio of devices announced today presents a pretty compelling proposition for someone looking for a mid-range smartphone.

We will be looking at the Symbian Belle OS in a little more detail in the coming days, in the meanwhile let us know what you think of the new OS and the devices announced today in the comments section below.

Apart from that it now also remembers your search history and adds some UI modifications to make the app look even more pretty. If you are using a N950 or a N9, the 4squick experience should be better for you, although UI is still directly from Symbian^3 build so everything is a bit small due to the higher resolution in Harmattan.

Changelog:

Venue photos support

Tips support

Read venue tips

Add a new tip

Share added tip to Twitter and Facebook

Mark tips as todo / done

Search history with top searches

Multiple fixes and UI modifications

A bit better Harmattan experience

4squick isn’t available on the Ovi Store yet, but you get get the .sis or .deb file from the download page.
The much awaited Symbian Anna update has finally started rolling out to all the Symbian^3 devices, which includes the Nokia N8, the E7, C7 and the C6-01. The update is being progressively rolled out across the world with the update already being available in the majority of European and Asian markets.

Symbian Anna is available as a 22+ MB over the air update or via the Ovi Suite application on the computer. Post the update your firmware should read as 22.014. All the data, settings etc would be preserved on the Symbian^3 devices even after the update, but its recommended that you create a backup nevertheless.

I recommend that you update to Symbian Anna as soon as possible to take advantage of functionality such as a split screen portrait QWERTY keyboard, a new web browser, drag-able homescreens, a much improved Mail client that’s faster and split screen month/day views in the calendar. Also present are improvements to the mail for exchange implementation, device encryption, and Anna also updates your handset to the latest version of Qt. Symbian Anna also unlocks the NFC capabilities of the C7.

If you notice any other changes, please let us know in the comments section below.

Now that Symbian Anna is here, the focus will inevitably shift to the yet unannounced Symbian Belle which is expected to be unveiled later this month in a event in Hong Kong. But before you start waiting, don’t expect to see it on existing devices for the next two months.

There have been screenshots from Symbian Belle (Anna’s unannounced successor) floating around the internet for a couple of days now, but there’s nothing like an eight minute video to really shows off the brand new UI that incorporates an Android like swipe down notification/connectivity toggle area.
The widgets are now a lot like the N900, and aren’t restricted by size. The camera UI is new, so is the browser. Belle also brings a back button based UI system to the mix in addition of a few other changes.

Forget Anna, this is the update that you are truly waiting for. Nokia hasn’t even officially acknowledged Belle yet, but you can be certain that older Symbian^3 devices like the N8, C7, E7 and so on will be receiving the update. We can expect Symbian Belle devices being announced at Nokia World in October, and that’s probably when Nokia will officially demo Belle as well.

4squick is a foursquare client for Symbian that just came out over a month ago, it was simple and it was fast, not to mention the great looking UI. Today its received an update that brings the ability to share your check-ins on Facebook and Twitter.

In addition to that it also launches faster and lets you check-in privately. Other changes include the ability to view the leaderboard to see how you’re doing compared to your friends and the ability to view profiles.

While the official foursquare app was also updated today, its not a patch on the speed and design on which 4squick operates. To show you just how well it works, I’ve put together a quick video that you can watch below.

You can download the application from the developer’s website. The default version comes with the new Nokia Pure font inbuilt, while there is also a version available without it.

If you use foursquare and have a Symbian device, I definitely recommend checking this app out.

With iOS and Android doing WIFI tethering natively, Nokia has also been concentrating on giving users access to this useful piece of technology for free. New devices like the N9 and E6 already come pre-loaded with Joikuspot, and it looks like some older Eseries devices are also getting the love.

So if you have the E52, E72 or the E5, hit the Ovi Store and get yourself free copy of the Joikuspot premium app for free!

Last week we told you that updates were coming to older S60 v3 and v5 devices, and the rollout has started. The Nokia E72 and E52 have received the new browser, emoticons, updates maps and performance improvements in the form of the v71.004 firmware, while the N97 Mini gets the same benefits with the v30.0.004 firmware.

The Nokia 5230, 5235, 5238 have also been updated to v50.6.001, v50.8.001 & v50.9.002 respectively. To check for updates, you can hit *#0000# in the dial pad and then goto options and check for updates. If you see the update, you can immediately download and install over the air. Alternately, you can connect to the computer and use the Ovi Suite or the separate Nokia Software Updater app to install the new firmware.

The devices feature user data preservation, so your data should be safe, but its always best to take a backup before proceeding, the OTA update is a little over 16 MB in size. For the full list of devices getting the update, look here.

Here’s some terrific news for those of you using older Symbian S60 v3.2 or v5 devices like the E72, N97 Mini, X6, C6 etc, Nokia is working on bringing a bunch of updates to the older family of Symbian devices. First is Nokia Browser 7.3, the same version that’s coming with Symbian Anna, next is an update to Ovi Maps, and finally there is emoticon support for text messages and MMS, all very welcome improvements.

Another good things is that unlike those of you Symbian^3 owners waiting for Symbian Anna, the updates for the older devices won’t make you wait too much. The Nokia C6-00 and Nokia 5230 get updates starting today, while the others will follow in the next few weeks. Here’s a complete list of devices getting the updates:

Symbian 3.2

Nokia E72

Nokia E52

Nokia E5

Nokia C5-00

Nokia 6700 slide

Symbian 5.0

Nokia C6-00

Nokia C5-03

Nokia 5230

Nokia 5235

Nokia 5250

Nokia X6

Nokia N97 mini

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic

As you can see Nokia has tried to cover all the popular models, you’ll find that the original N97 is missing, but hey, they’re probably trying very hard to forget it even exists. The Ovi Maps update will be different for S60 v3.2 and S60 v5, “Ovi Maps 3 SR4 will feature on Symbian 3.2 devices, bringing indoor positioning through WiFi, as well as travel and recommendation services such as those through Lonely Planet. For users of Symbian 5.0 devices, you’ll get Ovi Maps 3 SR6, adding public transport lines and check-in services to social networking sites”.

The news of this updates comes at a time when no one was really expecting Nokia to support these older devices, some of which are over two years old. Great work Nokia.

Here are a few pictures a took with the E6, in auto mode. Considering they were taken indoors with not so great lighting, I’d say the device did a pretty fair job. Also bear in mind that the pictures were not taken with final sales firmware. Click on the image for the full 8 Megapixel glory.

We previously told you about Nelisquare when it was in pre-alpha and only worked on the N900.
We previously told you about Nelisquare when it was in pre-alpha and only worked on the N900. But today, Tommi Laukkanen, the man behind the Qt Kasvopus Facebook client has released the Symbian version of the Foursquare client. The app is available for download from the Forum Nokia pages and I already have it running on my N8.

I’m also pleased to say that its much faster than the ‘official’ Symbian^3 app. While there are still a few features missing like looking at the badges you have, accessing your previous check-in history, it is still the best way to actually check-in from your Symbian^3 device.

There is also an option to visit the Foursquare leaderboard. Do keep in mind that the author still terms this release as an early alpha, so there may be some bugs. The application will eventually end up on the Ovi Store, but if you cannot wait, get cracking here.

Something Nokia users had given up on is finally happening, the Ovi Store will now start telling you when updates are available for the apps you have installed on your phone. This means no more hunting for the developer’s website to download the latest versions, and a much better Ovi Store (now Nokia Store) experience.

The new Ovi Store client (version 2.8) will be rolled out to Symbian^3 devices next week and the others will follow in due course. The update will also bring better top free and best seller recommendations along with more useful related items.

“After updating to Store 2.8, when the user launches the Store client and signs in, the client automatically checks if any of their downloaded apps have an update available. If there are updates, the user will see a green flag in the corner of your screen by your “Account” tab. Touching the flag will take the user to his account page where he can choose to update “All” or select individual apps.”

“With this release, we have also tweaked our algorithm for delivering Top Free and Best Sellers to make app and game listings more relevant for consumers. In particular, we refined our inputs and made the algorithm more precise so that the Store displays an exact representation of what is “Top” or “Best” by country and by device.

For instance, if a game is wildly popular and heavily used on an E72 device, it will not affect the rankings on an N8 device if the game is not also equally popular. The same applies for country-based variation. This will result in more relevant content selections and rankings, and in many cases, improve the discoverability of local applications. This feature is available across all device families, .com and .mobi sites.”

All in all it makes for a very welcome update to the Ovi Store, next week couldn’t come sooner.
