How To Copy Text Into & From Webpages Using Opera Mini 5

Opera today released Opera 5 Mini beta, the latest upgrade to its hugely successful web browser based on J2ME. The update brings many new features such as multiple windows/tabs, a speed dial, optimizations for touch devices and a password manager amongst other things. But the thing I am most excited about is the ability to copy text from a webpage. This functionality exists however, on first look it will appear as if you cannot copy the text out of the Opera Mini application or into it.

Fortunately, I have found a small work around that allows you to copy URL’s etc into the application as well as copy text out of it. More than anything, this makes Opera Mini 5 the best way to copy text from a webpage on a Symbian device. Read on for instructions.

(Hit Menu and then Settings)

(Goto Advanced and turn ‘Inline Editing’ off)

(Next simply open the webpage you want to copy text from. Long press the d-pad to bring up this menu)

(Hit ‘start’ to copy and ‘use’ when you have selected the text you need)

(Now, select ‘Search With…’)

(You will have ‘Google’ and ‘Wikipedia’ popup, now press the ‘up’ button on the d-pad such that both options disappear and then click into the box)

(You will see such a box appear)

(Now simply select and copy text as you normally would)

(Lastly, paste it into the notes application or wherever you like)
