It has been a few days since I got back from Barcelona and the N96 product launch and I have been thinking about it more and more. Will it work? Won’t it? What might be the reasons for its failure or success? In this post I will try and give a run down of all of that and compare it to some of the Nseries devices already in the market.
The N96 is expected to be out in Q3 at about 550€ unsubsidised. Now what that means is that the price of the current crop of Nseries will continue to fall till then on launch the N96 will be at least 100€ more expensive than any other Nseries on the market. Does it have enough to get the consumer to spent that little more? Lets have a look:

I have just had hands on time with both the devices and a meeting with the product managers of both devices. They were kind enough to answer everything we wanted to know about the respective devices. In this post I will go over my initial impressions of both devices while trying to incorporate all that I learnt talking to them. More shots here.

Sorry for the delay but here they are, live shots of the N78 and the N96! The complete flickr set is here and a few random pictures are below!

Update: The Nseries Website Demo is up too.
Update 2: Hands On With The N96 – After The Q&A Sessions!
The newest entrant into the Nseries lineup is the dual-sliding N96 – a turbo charged N95! It is expected to ship in the third quarter for 550 Euros unsubsidized, thats some waiting but I am going to have to say it is still exciting.
My first impressions are good. I still haven’t got it in my hands, but the problems which I had with N81 seem to be gone at least build wise. The N96 is essentially the big brother to the N81 with much better specs. It features much bigger ‘end’ and ‘call’ keys which were somewhat tough to reach on the former. I personally love the N81 design, what I missed on it was the dual slide and the N96 features that too.
The big surprise to me is the addition of DVB-H in the device, yes it is focussed on video playback with it even featuring a clip to lay the device down on the table for better viewing pleasure, but isn’t mobile TV at least in that form dead? We saw what happened to the N92, N77 but still Nokia seems to be persisting. DVB-H is available in only a handful countries and I do not expect it to ever become mainstream, so why burden the user with something he will pay for and never use?
We have a session with the product manager soon and I will look to address some of these questions. In case you want me to ask something specific, drop a line!
Will update the post soon!
After the pictures leak a while ago, Nokia’s German website (no longer works for me, but the cat is out of the bag!) has been a little hyperactive (retribution?) and has put up the N96 specs even before its announcement! This means that the N96 is on its way and will probably make its debut @ 3GSM.
Here they are:
Dualband HSDPA 850/2100 MHz
DVB-H Class C
92 cc volume
125 gram weight
103 x 55 x 18 mm
16 GB internal memory and a microSD slot; With even 16GB cards coming 32GB soon!
950 mAh battery
6.1 cm (2.8 inch) 320×240 display with 16 million colors
3.5 mm headphone jack
5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens that also does VGA video recording at 30 FPS, Dual LED flash that can also be used when video recording!
S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 (Flash Lite 3 enabled web browser included)
The 2.8″ screen is good, but the battery – I do not even want to comment! Looks like the N95 8GB in the N81’s shell with DVB-H! Bad news is that it still has an LED flash.

Its has been 24 hours since the N96 has been leaked and it has managed to generate quite a bit of buzz around the web. I saw the news yesterday but had an exam in the morning so couldn’t really spend time on the device. Since then I have a lot of questions in my mind, even had them bothering me while I was writing the exam! But lets start with what we know about the device or at least think we know:
– Music Centered Device based on the N81-N95 combine.
– A 5MP Camera with dual LEDs and no lens cover.
– Feature Pack 2.
– 2.6/2.8″ Screen. ( I hope is 2.8″)
– All features of the N95 and the audio quality of the N91 plus noise cancellation and 16GB storage may be.
– A provision to make it stand for video consumption.
– A card slot for even more memory!
– More shots of the device here.
Now here’s what I think.
