Anssi Vanjoki – ‘The N97 Has Been A Tremendous Disappointment In Terms Of The Experience Quality For The Consumers’

In an ‘speaking from the heart’ interview to Rafe and Ewan at the Mobile World Congress, Anssi Vanjoki bit the bullet and talked about the N97, what went wrong and how it has been a huge nightmare for Nokia.

It is unheard of for a company to acknowledge their faux pas so openly but such an acknowledgement and a promise that they have learnt from their mistakes was heartning to see.

He promises that Nokia will make sure that Symbian^3 will be ‘perfect’. Whether or not they deliever time will tell, but Nokia’s not announcing something at the MWC shows that they are not rushing things.

While this is no compensation for the people who bought the N97 when it first came out, it still says something.

Skype Out Of Beta – Compatible With S60 5th Edition Devices

Skype has finally come out of beta and now not only supports S60 3rd Edition (both FP1 and FP2) devices but also S60 5th Edition smartphones like the N97, N97 Mini, 5800 and so on. This means that the N97 finally has Skype support, something that was promised the day it shipped.

You can download Skype by going to skype.com/m from your phone’s browser. According to Steve over at AAS, the client for S60 5th Edition has been revamped and is a lot more demanding when it comes system resources like the RAM. So you can expect slowdowns when the application starts and loads contacts, chats etc. Apart from that call quality is good, so this is still a must install.

The compatibility list now includes a most devices starting with S60 3rd Edition, but some FP2 devices like the N86 and E72 seem to be missing, while other FP2 phones like the N96 are listed as compatible. I will try the application on my E72 and N86 and update this post with the results.

[Update: It works on both the E72 and the N86 as well].

Eight Killer Themes For The Nokia N97

Its been a while since I have highlighted a few themes here on The Symbian Blog, so I decided it was time to make some amends and here are eight killer themes for your Nokia N97, they should work on other S60 5th Edition devices as well.

As always, my focus has been on finding quality themes that you will not grow out of quickly. I’ve also tried to maintain a nice mix of dark and light themes.

iLight by Dsma – My current favourite, although I would like the bar under the clock to go away, but apart from that a very polished them. I recommend you also check out Dsma’s other work here.

Touch Vista By t7 – If all black is what you like. Sadly, only comes with the ‘7’ icon pack. I’d have loved default icons version as well.

How To Add Super Cool Transitions To The N97

The Symbian UI is generally criticised for not having enough eye candy and even if you turn on the theme effects on the N97, it doesn’t do much. However, for those of you who are fans of slick transitions, I have some good news. You can now add super cool theme effects onto your N97 easily and in under 5 minutes (that’s how long it took me) by following the simple tutorial below and without a computer. But first have a look at this YouTube video I’ve put together demonstrating some of these transition effects.

These transitions are the result of hard and brilliant work put in by DSCOBSCT and DAVEYP187 of SF. The transitions effects come in small packages and you can only use one at a time. Here’s how to get them to work:

  • Open ROM Patcher from the ‘Applications’ menu (or wherever you have moved it to) and you will see the ‘c2z’ patch. Enable it along with ‘open4all’ from the ‘Options’ menu.

How To Add Transitions To The N97

  • Open ‘X-Plore’. If you do not have it, then I recommend downloading it as it features the capability of extracting from ‘rar’ and ‘zip’ files.
  • Next, navigate to where you have stored the package on the phone and open it. You will see two folders, ‘effects’ and ‘skins’ irrespective of the package you downloaded.

How To Add Transitions To The N97

  • Select the two folders and hit Menu>File>Extract To.

  • Now, navigate to C:Resource and extract the folder into it.

How To Add Transitions To The N97

  • Make sure that the folder you have extracted are placed in the ‘Resource’ folder.

How To Add Transitions To The N97

  • Once that is done, simply exit X-Plore and goto Settings>Themes>General. Select ‘Options’ and toggle ‘Theme Effects’ off/on. Then leave it in the ‘On’ mode and exit.

  • You will now have your new effects in place. Enjoy!

TIP: Goto ROM Patcher, select ‘Options’ > ‘Patch’ > ‘Add to auto’ for the ‘c2z’ patch so that you have the transitions enabled everytime you bootup.

As is with all transitions, these also slow the phone down a bit and can cause some stability issues as well, although the ‘Swipe’ package is pretty efficient in these departments. As always, please try this at your own risk.

(Click through for the video)

As we wait for the N97, the good people at the Nseries Innovation Desk have put together the above Q&A with Axel Meyer, Head of Design at Nokia Nseries to get us better accquainted with the idea behind the N97.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Q&A start off with a question from me, so if you are looking forward to the N97, make sure you check this video out.

Eight Killer Themes For The Nokia 5800

[digg-me]Sadly, I still haven’t been able to get my hands on a 5800 yet, but that has not stopped me from scouting the internet for the best Nokia 5800 (N97/S60 v5) themes. Here is a collection of eight polished themes for you to have fun with. Click on the image to download.

Update – I have personally tried some of these themes (marked with a ***) on a 5800 I could get hold of for a little while and they worked just fine. However, to be safe – install the themes on the microSD so that in case something goes wrong you can simply pop the card out and prevent any damage.

So without further adieu here is the first theme:

  • ***At the top of the list is Winter Time by none other than Pizero. Download here.

If you appetite for themes has still not been satisfied, Daily Mobile has a link to a megapack of ten 5800 themes. Download Here. Have you come across any other good looking 5800/S60 v5 theme? If so, please share.

IMPORTANT

Please make sure you install the themes on the microSD and not in the phone memory. In the eventuality that you face a problem with any theme, simply remove the memory card and restart the device. Next simply pop the microSD inside and uninstall the theme.
