I am pleased to inform you that my favourite VOIP company Truphone has just announced the addition of 11 new Nokia S60 devices to its compatibility list. The application is now supported on 26 Nokia phones including FP2 devices and even the 5800 Xpress Music which runs S60 5th Edition.
Sadly, since Nokia had taken out the SIP stack on certain FP2 devices not all of them are VOIP capable, but within your home country you should still be able to use Truphone’s Anywhere plan. Here is how it works:
International calls dialled on a Truphone Anywhere enabled handset are connected as local calls to the Truphone network, then routed to their destinations at Truphone’s low rates. This means that for the price of local calls, which are often bundled in an operator’s monthly package, customers can make calls to other Truphone users for free or to landlines and mobiles around the world for as little as 1.5p per minute.
Newer Nseries FP2 devices such as the N85, N79 and the 5630 can however take advantage of the VOIP functionality and make calls over WIFI/3G as could devices such as the N95 and E71. This means that you could use Truphone to cut down on your roaming costs on these devices and on the others Truphone would be good for making cheaper international calls from your home country. The full list of newly added compatible devices includes:
- N96, N78
- N85, N79, 5630 (VoIP enabled)
- Nokia 5800
- Nokia 5320, 6210,6220, 6650
I am glad to see the 5800 in that list, it means that S60 5th Edition is supported and we should see support for the N97 soon if the existing 5800 client doesn’t already work on it. The application will be available via the Ovi Store as well as the Truphone website, but the client for the new devices will only be available from the Truphone website for now.
