Two Nokia 5800 Rumours I’d Like To See Come True

The Nokia 5800 has been a huge hit worldwide, the sales figures have surprised most people. The first S60 Touch device from Nokia was supposed to be an experiment which would pave the way for the Nseries flagship. However, it has turned out to be quite a good device which suffers from just a few follies.

The two aspects I didn’t really like were the resistive touchscreen, which isn’t as responsive as we’d like it to be, and the second being the waste of the screen’s real estate. Two rumors have surfaced that might just right these wrongs.

The first is that Nokia is prepping a variant of the Nokia 5800 that would have a capacitive touchscreen. According to DigiTimes, Nokia’s initial orders of new capacitive touchscreens will result in the production of two million 5800 handsets, with shipments of the new version to begin in May-June. They further go on to state that Nokia is also expected to roll out more models with capacitive touch panels, including ultra-thin and QWERTY versions, starting the third quarter.

While this is music to my ears, I’m not sure putting in the capacitive touchscreen is a simple matter of swapping and replacing. But if Nokia actually do this, the 5800 will rock even harder. A typographical error (or what?) in a recent Ovi suite survey lists the Nokia 5800 and Nokia 5800 Xpress Music as two separate devices, and this might further fuel our hopes.

Nokia 5800 Running The N97's Firmware

The second rumour shows pictures of a 5800 running the N97’s widget enabled firmware. These may easily be fake and just a standard screenshot loaded in the full screen mode, but if someone has actually managed to do this – wonderful. The 5800 desperatly needs better homescreen settings and kinetic scrolling, at the very least.
