Free Navigation Comes To The E71 & E66

‘You spoke, we listened’ is what the Nokia Conversations post detailing the free navigation offering for the E71 and E66 starts with and I have got to say that this is phenomenal news for all you E71 and E66 owners. You can now enjoy free worldwide pedestrian and car navigation on your E71 or E66 along with all the other benefits of Ovi Maps such as side loading of maps and the ability to use them without a data connection.

Free Global Navigation Comes To The E71 & E66

The only things missing from the offering are Michelin and Lonely Planet guides, an almost non issue. Why I am specially pumped about this news is because in my experience the E71 had stellar GPS performance.

The process of making the latest version of Ovi Maps available for existing devices is quite involved, but the team managed to include complete navigation functionality. Due to technical constraints in backporting the app to existing devices, it isn’t possible to offer further premium content such as Guide Michelin and Lonely Planet guides. These two devices will also be the last of our S60 3.1 and older devices to sport this version of Ovi Maps.

The free navigation edition of the Ovi Maps application is available from the maps.nokia.com website, in case you are reading on the go, I have managed to extract the direct download link. If you read through the quote, you will notice that the E71 and E66 will be the last S60 Feature Pack 1 devices to get this offering. Sad news for those of you with N82’s or N95’s.

Changelog For The E71 & E66 v300.21.012 Firmware

The complete changelog is now available for the new v300 firmware that came out for both the E71 and the E66 on July 2nd. Amongst other things, the update is expected to improve camera quality on the E71, however it blocks the ‘hack’ on both devices.

So have a look at the changes and decide for yourself if you want to update.

New Nokia E66 Firmware v300.21.012 Now Available

They just keep coming in! Right after the E71 firmware update, comes news that the E66 has also been given the new v300.21.012 firmware. Like was the case with the E71 firmware, there’s no word about the changes that have been incorporated.

The E66 firmware is available via the Nokia Software Updater and there is no over the air download ability for this Feature Pack 1 device. Please bear in mind, you will also loose all data on your phone memory when you update so make sure you create a backup before you fire up the NSU.

Nokia has been blocking the ‘hack’ through new firmwares for various devices, so if you are into that sort of things, it might be a good idea to hold on, else fire up the NSU and see if its available for your product code.

Both The E71 & E66 Updated – Now Up To v.110 (Changelog Inside)

Both the E71 and the E66 have been updated to v. 110.07.127 and v. 110.07.126 respectively. This update brings a new versions of Mail For Exchange and Nokia Maps and also includes a number of performance improvements including camera viewfinder orientation, Mail for Exchange synchronisation and browsing.

But before you update, a word of caution- this update kills the ability to ‘hack’ your phone, so if you’re interested in that sort of thing – stay clear. Both Mail For Exchange and Nokia Maps can be updated by stand alone SIS files if that’s some consolation.

Thoughts On The E66 & E71

The initial euphoria and the rush that comes with long awaited product launches is finally over and after going through a lot of information on these new blue eyed boys of the Eseries lineup, I have decided to pen my own thoughts. The one thing I can say for sure that these are two of the most good looking devices ever made by Nokia and the White Steel colour/material combination is an absolute killer. However inspite of the fact that they have been released together, basically offer the same specifications and are targetted at the same group of people these are two completly different devices.

The E66 & E71 Finally Official

The E66 & E71 Finally OfficialNokia E66 Back - Share on Ovi

I just can’t seem to get over the looks of these phones to look further. Period. The basic specifications are the same as we already know them. A 3.2 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi and FP1. When details first came out, the FP1 was a little disappointment but Nokia seems to have compensated with a lot of tweaks for these enterprise targetted devices. First up is a revamped calender application, plus the ability to switch the home screen depending on time of the day/week or whatever you may like. Another interesting thing is that these devices will come with support for Ovi. Plus the clock screensaver has been revamped and looks swell (Thanks Stefan!). More coverage below.
